Franny Drummond of PaintZoo Studios Chats
With Dynabrade

We had the privilege of having Franny Drummond of PaintZoo stop by our offices for a tour. He was able to see our extensive tool line and get his hands on some tools. After the tour we asked him some questions about his career.

How did you first get into painting?
FRANNY: I went to Art School in Miami and started painting surfboards

Do you have a mentor or a famous artist you're inspired by?
FRANNY: Many artists have inspired me over the years, but particularly Pete Finlin of Hot Dog Customs, Nub Graphix and Charles Armstrong. They are all very inspirational artists.

Paint Zoo Studios, is there a meaning behind your name?
FRANNY: My life is paint and it's always a Zoo!

Could you explain what your business all entails?
FRANNY: We do custom paint, airbrush and pin-striping. Everything from NHL Goalie masks to hot rods.

How did you start painting helmets for recognized teams?
FRANNY: Back in 2009 I did a panel for a charity event hosted by Riley Cote a Philadelphia Flyer and the other players asked if I could do a custom goalie mask for them.

What has been one of your favorite pieces of all time?
FRANNY: Any mask that I have done for the Flyers is my favorite because growing up I wanted to be them.

Favorite color?
FRANNY: Green

What is a favorite theme of yours that you have used in many pieces?
FRANNY: I don't really have a favorite but I always enjoy doing something that my customers are excited about.

Are you the only one who paints each item or do you have help?
FRANNY: I have help with prep work, but I am the only one that paints.

Tell us about Electric Circus Boutique? I know this is a new venture for you.
FRANNY: Electric Circus is a name that I thought of years ago and I had always wanted to have my own art gallery. We (Amy and myself) also decided to add the boutique so customers could get accessories and apparel. It's a rad place to visit because there's always something to see.

So, you're a dad, how many kids do you have? Are any of your kids interested in painting?
FRANNY: I have 3 children 11,17 and 19. My oldest is also an artist.

Anything in the works that people should look out for?
FRANNY: There's a few new things in the works, but the United States Navy football helmets is something that is always an honor to do. They can be seen at this year's Army vs. Navy Game held in December 2021.
