Collecting Non-Metallic in Certified or Ordinary Location?

A Certified Location is defined as an area that has been designated an area of risk. A dust hazard analysis has determined that the type of dust and amount of dust accumulating (5% of surface coverage @ a thickness of 1/32" or above), now requires protected equipment. A special call-out of designated Class, Division and Group of a certified vacuum system will be defined in each scenario, depending on type of material being collected. These vacuum system have been designed, manufactured and then certified through a third party testing lab (CSA,UL) to ensure that the vacuum will contain all spark and eliminate the possibility to be the cause/source of ignition for a potential dust explosion.

It is ultimately a company's responsibility to select the proper equipment in respect to safety. All facilities can be held accountable by one or all authorities having jurisdiction. OSHA, Local fire inspectors/officials and even your insurance company are good examples to name a few. Select the proper equipment that will ensure that your workers remain safe in their everyday work environments, making sure you meet the mandates set forth by NFPA and its policing agencies AHJ, OSHA, Insurance Companies.

Ordinary Location is defined as an area that has been designated as a non-risk area. Through a dust hazard analysis, the type of dust and level of dust coverage in a particular work cell (and or) facility has been deemed safe for the use of an ordinary location portable vacuum system. There is no concern that the area of dust has reached the level of accumulation, where a spark from the vacuum could be the cause/source of ignition for a potential dust explosion.

Dynabrade does not recommend the use of an ordinary location vacuum system, but rather that of a certified Division II (two) system to ensure the elimination of a potential spark/source of ignition, even in a Ordinary Location.
